The Island of Dhigurah is probably the most beautiful island that you have never heard of in the Maldives. It is a local island without the chic resorts famous in the Maldives, but instead it has a long and beautiful white sandy beach.
We recently visited two local islands in the Maldives -Dhigurah and Fulidhoo – and we couldn’t be happier with our choice. They were both nice and different.
This guide will tell you how to get to Dhigurah Island, what to do, where to stay and everything you need to know before you go!
How to get to Dhigurah Island
There is no airport in Dhigurah, so you must first fly to the capital of the Maldives via Male International Airport (MLE), which is about 100 kilometers (60 mi) from Dhigurah.
From Male, you can take a speedboat or a ferry directly to Dhigurah, or you can take a seaplane or a domestic flight to one of the neighboring islands, then take a boat for the rest of the way.
By public speedboat
The main way to Dhigurah is by public speedboat, and this is how we drove. There are daily morning and afternoon departures from Male Airport and the city.
The speedboat ride to Dhigurah takes 2 hours each way. Children over 3 years old pay full price.
The boat ride is usually not too bumpy (depending on the weather), and you have a toilet and plenty of space to store your luggage. The boats are new and the seats are comfortable. They will also give you free mineral water.
The boats from Male to Dhigurah leave at 11 am and 4:30 am (10 am on Fridays). The return boats from Dhigurah to Male leave at 6:30 AM and 1:30 PM (1:45 PM on Fridays). On the way to Dhigurah, there is a short stop on the Island of Dhangethi.
Keep in mind, however, that there are several speedboat companies that operate this route and the schedule seems to change occasionally, so I would check the schedule with your hotel in Dhigurah before leaving.
By private speedboat
A private speedboat rental costs much more than public speedboats, but it can be more convenient if you want to save time and need a direct connection from one of the other Maldives islands to Dhigurah.
You should be able to agree on this with your hotel on the Island of Dhigurah.
With The domestic plane
One of the easiest ways to get to Dhigurah is to take a 20-minute Villa Air/FlyMe domestic flight from Male to the airport on the neighboring island of Maamigili (VAM), followed by a 5-minute taxi ride to the port and a 20-minute speedboat ride to Dhigurah.
In rare matters where the waves are too rough for a normal boat crossing, this may be your only way to get to Dhigurah.
By seaplane
A seaplane trip is one of the most picturesque and fun ways to get to Dhigurah, but it is also the most expensive.
There is no fixed schedule for seaplane flights, so you will have to agree in advance with your hotel, and hopefully you will be able to share the flight with other passengers traveling in the same direction.
By public ferry
This route is operated by MTCC several days a week with morning and evening departures. You can confirm the current schedule with MTCC or with your hotel in Dhigurah, and they should also be able to help you buy tickets.
